I got a letter from the IRS. What should I do first?
Don't ignore it and don't pay before you understand it. Note the date on the letter and the response deadline, then book an appointment and bring the letter with you.
Is an IRS letter always bad news?
No. Many notices ask for information, confirm a change, or adjust a refund. The notice number in the corner tells you which kind it is.
Can you help if the return was prepared by someone else?
Yes. Bring the notice and the return in question.
